REFLECTIVE PRACTICE

Reflective Practice for filmmakers offers a confidential, non‑judgemental space to consider your work and the emotional labour it involves. Adapted from supervision models in psychotherapy, Reflective Practice provides support for working with complex stories and navigating pressurised relationships and responsibilities as the central components to making films.

The focus is on your filmmaking process and how the work is affecting you. This enables perspective, greater insight into relational dynamics, processing of challenging material, and finding more sustainable ways to stay in the work over time. Each session is shaped by what you or your team bring that day.

Reflective Practice (which we formerly termed ‘Film Supervision’) is becoming increasingly expected by funders, particularly for films which include traumatic subject matter. It is not therapy, but it holds therapeutic benefits such as feeling supported, feeling less alone and enabling greater self-confidence and creativity in the making of your project.

Sessions consider, but are not be limited to:

  • The impact on the filmmaker – what is happening for you as you hold these stories in your hands?
  • Ethical dilemmas and ethics in practice – how are you navigating decisions, responsibility and accountability?

  • Duty of care and protection – how are you keeping yourself, your crew, participants and audience safe enough?
  • Relationships and power dynamics – how are you navigating conflict, communication and consent?
  • Personal and project development – how might you grow and progress your skills and career going forward?

Please fill our intake form so that we may link you to a member of our specially trained Film Ethics and Care Consultants in this practice. They each bring their own experience of the film industry with therapeutic training to support you in the making of your film.

Sessions are 50 minutes and most effective if regularly scheduled. If you are looking for more ad hoc consultation with a focused theme or need, please see consultancy.
