Docs by the Sea: Collaboration, Creativity and Care

By Film in Mind Research and Development lead, Documentary Producer and Trainee Therapist, Clair Maleney

I have just returned from the truly beautiful gathering of Docs by the Sea and Just Futures Impact Story Lab in Bali, hosted by In Docs.

At Film in Mind, we are pushing for industry culture to change by centering care, and at Docs by the Sea I got to see what that looks like in action. In every detail, I felt In Docs’ mission to foster openness and connection in the documentary ecosystem.

As part of this mission, I ran a Storytelling Workshop which encouraged participants to connect with one another by sharing stories of collaboration. Holding this space, listening to filmmakers, funders, and industry representatives share about their real lives, I felt the power of vulnerability and authenticity to shift our industry towards care and connection.

I left inspired by the filmmakers and industry representatives I met there who are using storytelling to change the world. It was my delight and privilege to join the incredible team at In Docs for this workshop. It would be a joy to open spaces like this at more film festivals in the future, thank you for having me.
